Self Righteous Bloggers Bore Me to Death

peter monn_peter monn

Readers either seem to relate to my really sappy posts about something thoughtful or they relate to my more brutally honest posts, of which this one will fit.  Tonight, while catching up on The Following and Jane the Virgin, I found myself floating from one blog to the next.  Some are my current favorites while some are blogs I used to follow on a regular basis.  For the last few years I’ve noticed a growing trend that serious writers are criticizing bloggers as not being real writers because they don’t have any real impact on the world or that they don’t really have anything of value to say.  I think this is quite interesting, as a blogger and author, because every industry PR exec from the fashion world to the tech world can tell you how profoundly bloggers affect the world, even directing the trends to the masses.

Bravo for Rainbow Rowell’s Attachments: A Review

attachments rainbow rowell_peter monn

Wow! My first book review on my website.  I’m not even really sure where to start.  I don’t like stars, so none of my reviews will have a star rating.  When I was a little kid in elementary school, I tended to always get blue stars instead of gold and red like the other students.  At the end of my 2nd grade, I asked my teacher why I had always received blue stars and she said because she felt that they were exactly the color of my eyes.  At the time, I didn’t understand what a powerful compliment she was giving me and I stayed stuck in the fact that my fellow classmates were prancing home papers emblazoned with gold stars while my refrigerator glowed back at me in a sea of blue stars.

A Pretty Cool Thing

the before now and after then print cover_peter monn

Let me make one thing perfectly clear; I am a writer, not a book marketer, publicist or PR agent.  I suck at the business angle of selling books and besides that, I’m probably the world’s worst Tweeter, something apparently very important in the world of selling books.  That being said, (watch out for horn tooting) I can tell one hell of a story.  I like creating characters and weaving them together in ways people wouldn’t expect.  I like feeling those characters come alive and live beside me in my world.

When I was a kid, I didn’t like myself very much.  I was made fun of by other kids and I never felt like I fit in.  Books became my refuge, my safe place, where I could hide and find solace.  The characters in books became my friends.  To be able to possibly create a character like that today for someone to read and relate to is powerful to me.  To me, one positive review is ten times more powerful than 1000 negative reviews because it means I touched someone’s heart.

A few weeks ago, my publisher suggested we run a sale on my book, The Before Now and After Then, for $.99, with a follow-up giveaway with the book being free.  Now, I’m a storyteller, yes, but don’t get me wrong, I’d like to make a few bucks from my stories, even if it’s a dollar, so the idea of basically giving the book away terrified me.  And then the day of the sale came and tons of people were downloading my book for $.99.  I started getting Tweets and emails from fellow writers and people in Greece, France and all over the world telling me how much they loved my book and related to the characters.  The book shot to the top of Amazon’s charts, both for Young Adult/Teen and Gay Fiction and held pretty solid at it’s core ranking too.  That day alone, I basically made no money, but tons of new readers from around the world were reading my book.

Today was the free Amazon giveaway of my book.  I was a little nervous to see what would happen and terrified of the idea of people thinking I was less of a writer for basically giving my book away for free until my publisher contacted me with news that thousands of people were downloading my book.  Again, I started getting messages on all of my social networking sites and emails telling me how much they loved my book, asking for a sequel and wondering what I was writing now.  At long last I felt like that author who I had always admired, even if it was just for a moment.  My book was #2 on Amazon’s Free Book Bestsellers! Pretty amazing.

I hope that are sale strategy works and that people do start talking about my book and get interested in my world and what I’m writing.  I hope that it wasn’t all a fluke and bunch of people downloading free copies for nothing, but I don’t think it was.  I remember years ago when my husband and I had just started our entertainment website.  We were the first ones to blog about Kanye West dissing Taylor Swift at the MTV awards.  I remember how we excitedly sat by our computers that night, watching our views grow by the minute.  Our final view count for that post is miniscule in comparison to what we get on a daily basis now.  Looking back though, it felt more special.  It felt innocent and raw and exciting.  It felt real.

Today feels real.  People are reading my book.  And for a simple little guy like me who just always wanted to have a book published, well, that’s a pretty cool thing.

Much love,

Peter

The Best Chili Recipe Contest!

michael myers halloween_peterisms

Autumn is probably my favorite season in Indiana.  I love the way fall weaves oranges and reds through the changing leaves of the trees and I love the cool whisper of the wind at night.  Since a very young age, Autumn has always represented mystery, suspense and tall tales.  Halloween is by far my favorite holiday.  Growing up, all of the neighborhood kids would work weeks in advance designing a haunted house in our garage and then on the night of Halloween trick or treaters would come through our scary maze while we munched on my mom’s chili and apple muffins.

As sad as I am to admit it, summer is over.  But with it’s endings comes that late night whisper as the wind pushes fallen leaves down our street and I am yearning for the perfect horror movie to watch, my favorite genre, while sitting back and devouring a delicious bowl of chili.  It is, after all, the only meal I can cook effectively.

Cover Reveal & Synopsis for The Before Now and After Then by Peter Monn

the before now and after then official cover_peter monn

Immediate Release from Pen Name Publishing:

The Before Now and After Then

by Peter Monn

Danny Goldstein has always lived in the shadow of his identical twin brother, Sam. But when a hurricane of events forces him into the spotlight, he starts to realize that the only thing he’s truly afraid of is himself. With the help of his costume changing friend Cher, a famous uncle with a mysterious past of his own, two aging punk rocker parents and Rusty, the boy who will become his something to live for, Danny begins to realize that the music of the heart is truly the soundtrack for living.”

“We’ve been talking up Peter Monn’s The Before Now and After Then for the past few months as we gear up for his release on 7-29-2014.

Today, we bring you the much anticipated cover.  We elected to stick with current trends of simplistic design centered around a symbolic element from the story.  In this case, an unlabeled B-Side of a mix tape.  The background is a nice and vibrant green, evoking the school bag of a very important boy who becomes the narrator’s reason for living.

Every now and then a publisher comes across their dream manuscript.  We knew we would find many that we loved, but we never expected our third release to be such a powerful and moving title.  We truly believe that The Before Now and After Then has the power to transcend genre’s and bridge gaps that span between social stigmas and social acceptance.

This YA Novel deals with issues that begin during adolescence and often haunt people well into their adult years.  However, the loveable main character, Danny Goldstein, takes a turn and in exchange, turns the tables on life by conquering himself and those that challenge him along the way.

It is extremely hard to talk about this book without giving away the farm.  All we can say is to trust us and give this book a chance.  We have never felt so strongly about a piece and it’s potential to be a positive force for change.  We truly believe that Peter Monn has the ability to be one of the strongest voices of his generation and bring LGBT or Diverse literature across lines, past social stigma, and into the hearts of readers worldwide.

Yes, the lead character is gay.  Yes, the lead character falls in love.  But this is not merely a gay love story.  It is a beautiful tapestry that is carefully woven, will touch your soul, inspire you to be better to those you come in contact with, stand up for those who are being held down, and reach out a helping hand to those around you.  It just so happens to be a story about a boy who is struggling and along the way, finds his first love.  In a boy.

Our goal is to bring you bold stories by bold authors.  To push boundaries, to bring stories to life that will challenge, create, and inspire.

If there is any book that truly embodies this set of goals within its pages, it is The Before Now and After Then.

Reviews and ARC copies will be available on 7-1-2014 and we are taking review requests for this title.  Furthermore, Peter Monn is available for interviews and more information about the author can be found on his website at http://petermonn.com
